Position Summary

The Social Action Coordinator will facilitate communication and coordination amongst the Social Action Community (SAC) Board, ministers, other staff, program leaders, and other parishioners. S/he will assist the SAC Board to implement and evaluate a two-year project designed to increase congregational participation in social action activities.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Serve as First Parish primary Social Action Community (SAC) contact and provide administrative leadership for social action
    1. Model Unitarian Universalist principles and values and respectful ways of allying with organizations led by and for disadvantaged groups
    2. Attend weekly staff meetings and monthly SAC Board meetings
    3. Field and respond to or route incoming social action related emails and calls
    4. Distribute information about social action events, meetings, and trainings
    5. Help administer First Parish’s social action grant program and pilot share-the-plate collections
  2. Along with the Senior Minister and other First Parish staff, integrate social justice work into parish activities
  3. Along with the Senior Minister and other worship staff, integrate social action into Sunday worship services
    1. Recruit congregants to speak and light the Social Action candle during each service
    2. Participate in three-quarters of Sunday services and coffee hours
  4. With the SAC Board, pilot new ways of conducting social action at First Parish, including:
    1. Social action community building across age groups
    2. Social justice related training, discussion of relevant readings, and workshops
    3. Assessment of pilot activities and recommendations for moving forward
    4. Gather congregational input on social justice priorities

Job Qualifications

  • Experience with faith-based social justice work (professionally or as a volunteer, UU or non-UU) and comfort with communicating the spiritual dimension of social justice work
  • Demonstrated leadership and group facilitation skills
  • Familiarity with Unitarian Universalist Principles and values, or willingness to learn
  • Familiarity with local social justice movement(s), or demonstrated ability to build relationships with social justice organizations
  • Prior community organization experience a plus

  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Basic computer skills: word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Experience using social media for social justice purposes
  • Capacity to think strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political issues affecting the community
  • Well-developed emotional intelligence and insight into own internalized biases
